At a time when the people of Iran are facing one of the most difficult periods in their modern history, Iranians living abroad are also confronted with a serious responsibility. We are not merely observers of events taking place in our homeland. We remain part of the same nation, connected by culture, language, and history. Today, more than ever, unity, awareness, and responsibility among Iranians living outside Iran have become essential.
Over the past decades, many individuals connected to the Islamic Republic — including relatives of officials, political insiders, and beneficiaries of the system — have moved to Western countries. Some of these individuals now live in the same communities as ordinary Iranian immigrants who left their homeland seeking freedom, security, and opportunity.
This situation raises important questions not only for the Iranian community but also for the security and integrity of the host countries where we now live.
In recent years, numerous reports from Western governments and media outlets have pointed to the activities of networks linked to the Islamic Republic’s security apparatus, including individuals associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In some cases, these networks have been accused of gathering intelligence, monitoring dissidents, or attempting to influence or intimidate Iranian activists abroad.
For this reason, awareness within the Iranian diaspora is extremely important.
Members of the Iranian community abroad should remain attentive to unusual or suspicious activities in their surroundings. In some cases, individuals who openly promote the agenda of the Islamic Republic or maintain visible connections with organizations tied to its security institutions may attempt to operate quietly within diaspora communities.
This does not mean that accusations should be made lightly.
Political disagreement alone should never be the basis for suspicion or accusation. Responsible citizenship requires fairness and respect for the rule of law.
However, when credible concerns arise — such as suspicious behavior, organized efforts to intimidate activists, or activities connected to groups officially designated as terrorist organizations — reporting these concerns to appropriate authorities can be an important civic responsibility.
In the United States, individuals who notice potentially suspicious activities can contact local law enforcement or federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The goal of such reporting is not to create fear or division, but rather to ensure that the freedoms and security of democratic societies are not abused by hostile actors.
The Iranian diaspora has long been recognized as one of the most vibrant and successful immigrant communities in the world. Iranian doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, scholars, and professionals have made significant contributions to their host countries.
But with success also comes a responsibility to protect the values of freedom, law, and public safety.
History has shown that authoritarian regimes sometimes attempt to extend their influence beyond their borders. The Islamic Republic has been repeatedly accused by international observers of trying to monitor, pressure, or silence critics living abroad.
In such circumstances, silence and indifference can allow dangerous networks to grow unnoticed.
The strength of the Iranian diaspora lies in its unity and awareness. When a community is alert and engaged, it becomes much harder for extremist networks or hostile actors to operate within it.
If signs of concerning or suspicious activity appear, they should not simply be ignored. Calm, responsible communication with proper authorities helps ensure that concerns are handled professionally and according to the law.
Such actions also demonstrate that Iranian communities abroad respect the legal systems and democratic principles of the countries in which they live.
History teaches us that the future of any nation is shaped not only by leaders or governments, but also by the sense of responsibility shown by ordinary people.
Today, that responsibility extends to millions of Iranians living across North America, Europe, and other parts of the world.
This is a moment for unity, vigilance, and civic responsibility — a moment to stand for the values of freedom, security, and justice that allow our communities to thrive.
Silence in the face of potential threats can sometimes carry consequences.
But awareness, unity, and lawful action can help ensure a safer future for all.
