As April draws to a close, the message behind Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) becomes even more urgent: awareness should not end when the calendar flips. What began as a national movement in the United States has grown into a global call for accountability, education, and—most importantly—support for survivors.

This month is symbolized by the color teal, a quiet but powerful signal of solidarity. Across cities—from small communities to major hubs like Los Angeles—people wear teal ribbons, light buildings in teal, and share stories that for too long were silenced.

Why This Month Matters

Sexual violence is not rare, not distant, and not confined to any one group. It crosses borders, cultures, and generations. According to organizations like RAINN, millions of people in the United States alone experience sexual assault in their lifetime. And yet, many cases are never reported.

That silence is not accidental. It comes from fear—fear of not being believed, of retaliation, of shame imposed by society instead of the perpetrator. That’s exactly why this month exists: to break that silence.

The Power of Awareness

Awareness isn’t just about statistics. It’s about changing behavior.

It means teaching consent clearly and early.
It means recognizing warning signs.
It means understanding that support for survivors is not optional—it’s a responsibility.

Campaigns throughout April emphasize one simple but transformative idea: listen and believe. When survivors are heard without judgment, it shifts the culture away from blame and toward justice.

A Community Responsibility

In diverse communities—including Persian-speaking communities in California—this topic is often even more difficult to discuss. Cultural stigma, family pressure, and fear of social consequences can make survivors feel trapped.

That’s why local awareness matters. Community leaders, media platforms, and even small publications have a role to play in opening this conversation. Silence protects abusers. Awareness protects people.

Support and Resources

For those affected, help exists—and it is confidential and accessible. Organizations like RAINN provide 24/7 support through hotlines and online chat services. There are also local crisis centers throughout California offering counseling, legal guidance, and emergency support.

No one has to face this alone.

Beyond April

As the final days of April pass, the real question is this: what happens next?

Awareness cannot be seasonal. The responsibility does not disappear in May. Every conversation, every article, every act of support contributes to a larger cultural shift—one where dignity, safety, and respect are non-negotiable.

The teal ribbon may come off at the end of the month.
But the message must stay.
