Mehregan: Reviving an Ancient Celebration of Iranian Culture
For generations, we Iranians have carried within us the belief that our ancient culture and traditions should never be forgotten. Among these timeless celebrations is Mehregan—a festival that, alongside Nowruz, once stood as a symbol of love, friendship, and gratitude for life and creation. Sadly, over time and through the trials of exile, this great celebration faded from public memory, its vibrant voice growing faint even in its homeland.
From its earliest years, Tehran Magazine has taken upon itself the mission of reviving this heritage. The first Mehregan festivals organized by our magazine were not just gatherings; they were statements of cultural survival. On those nights, the Lion and Sun flag was proudly raised, and the traditional Mehregan table (Khan-e-Mehregan) was displayed before the community. For many, this was the very first time they witnessed the beauty of this ancient tradition with their own eyes.
Today, decades later, we see how far this vision has traveled. The echoes of Mehregan are no longer limited to Los Angeles. They are now celebrated across the United States and even beyond, reaching Dubai and other parts of the world. What began as a single effort in Los Angeles has blossomed into a movement—one where even at other Mehregan festivals, the symbolic table is now part of the celebration. This is a source of immense pride for us, proof that a seed planted long ago has grown and borne fruit.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the friends, organizers, and community members who in recent years have helped expand Mehregan. Their efforts not only keep a tradition alive but also reconnect new generations with their Iranian identity and heritage.
At Tehran Magazine, our greatest hope is that one day Mehregan will once again be celebrated inside Iran itself—with the same grandeur and national recognition as Nowruz. We dream of the day when all Iranians, across the globe, can hear the voice of this ancient festival rising from their homeland once more.
